Is Apple really the best brand of all the other brands for laptops? Does any other brand even come close?
I need a new laptop and Im considering buying an Apple laptop, but I dont know.
It *really* depends on what you are looking for.
+Mac OS X is based on Unix, a stable & secure operating system. It’s similarity and hardware penetration (1000s of users have the same configuration) means that other UNIX and Linux support is typically top-notch.
+Many people enjoy Mac OS and Mac computers. Apple always tops the customer satisfaction charts in PC Magazine. Apple users are happy people (in general).
+Build quality of Macs is generally great, and most people (in my experience) love the form factor.
+You can run Windows on a Mac easily and dual boot OS X / Windows or triple boot OS X / Windows / Linux.
-Macs can’t be custom ordered for the most part. A few configs.
-IF you’re looking at a Macbook, they no longer include firewire (this means, if you love video editing, you need to go up to a Mac Book pro) and they have typically limited graphics (to push people to the MBP). This pushing towards the upgrade gives you limited choice. If you have a single feature that you need to have, you might have to pay $1000 more for a Macbook Pro, whereas you could get a computer more tailored to your needs (less $for that “must have”) if you bought a PC.
-When Apple introduces a new casing or radically changes the internals, it’s considered “generation 1″. G1 Apple products often have bad issues that Apple may not acknowledge for months, if ever. iPod Nano 1G scratches, early MacBook Pros overheated, etc.
-If you prefer Windows, Macs don’t include Windows licences, which are $100-$200 for licenses locked to one PC or $200-$400 for a license that may be moved to a new PC in the future.
For build quality, Lenovo’s ThinkPads (not the IdeaPads) come close. As far as performance, ThinkPads and Dell Latitudes are on par.
